Vacation Property Protection Checklist
An empty home is an attractive target for thieves and vulnerable to undetected problems. Use this checklist before your next trip to protect your property while you're away.
Security Measures
Set timers on lights and consider smart plugs for varied schedules. Stop mail and package delivery, or have a trusted neighbor collect them. Don't announce travel plans on social media.
Water and Plumbing
Consider shutting off the main water supply for extended trips. Ensure water heater is in vacation mode if applicable. Check that no faucets drip and toilets don't run.
Climate Control
Set thermostat to conserve energy while preventing freezing—typically 55–60°F in winter. In summer, avoid shutting off AC entirely in humid climates to prevent mold.
Emergency Contacts
Leave a key and contact information with a trusted neighbor or friend. Provide your itinerary and emergency numbers. Ensure they know where shutoff valves and electrical panels are located.
